Carburettor Heat
Discussion in USENET as always was heated on the subject of Carby Heat use. However, the majority
I think went along with this technique tidbit. Many people were instructed to pull on the
carby heat on downwind but then push it back in approaching or at the base turn point. Most
people agreed that carby icing was even more likely from this point as the engine was throttled
back further. So the technique discussed was to simply leave carby heat selected for the entire
base and finals sequence. The CAUTION associated with this is that while carby
heat is selected you will have less than maximum power available. So in the event of a go-around
or once on the runway for the touch and go it is extremely important to turn the carby heat OFF.
There has also been the suggestion to turn it off during the PUF checks on short finals, whatever works for you.
